I’ve always figured that Al Gore had no idea of what he was talking about in regards to Global Warming Climate Change.  His recent appearance on The Tonight Show again confirmed my assertions.

When I heard this assertion of the Earth’s core being millions and millions of degrees, all I could think of was Dr. Evil asking for “one hundred billion dollars.”  Funny in the Austin Powers move, not really so funny in real life.

Here is an excerpt from the National Review online:

The geothermal gradient is usually quoted as 25–50 degrees Celsius per mile of depth in normal terrain (not, e.g., in the crater of Kilauea). Two kilometers down, therefore, (that’s a mile and a quarter if you’re not as science-y as Al) you’ll have an average gain of 30–60 degrees — exploitable for things like home heating, though not hot enough to make a nice pot of tea. The temperature at the earth’s core, 4,000 miles down, is usually quoted as 5,000 degrees Celsius, though these guys claim it’s much less, while some contrarian geophysicists have posted claims up to 9,000 degrees. The temperature at the surface of the Sun is around 6,000 degrees Celsius, while at the center, where nuclear fusion is going on big time, things get up over 10 million degrees.

If the temperature anywhere inside the earth was “several million degrees,” we’d be a star.

I checked several online sources and found varying degrees of the earth’s core temperature and found those figures mirrored this article pretty closely.  Was he saying this to just make some wierd point or is he just talking out of his backside.  I’ll go for the later, especially since his figures are over 100-200 times higher than reality (depending on what source you use.)

For a guy that has had some real glaring errors with his Academy Award winning documentary (or work of fiction of you so desire), An Inconvenient Truth, it seems that he would try extra hard to get the facts right.  I guess not so much.  I suppose it’s all about the money for him and inconveniencing the rest of us.
