Why Americans Hate the Big3 U.S. Automakers

27 January 2009 6 Comments

The Big3 U.S. Automakers (sans Ford) are well into their bailout money leaving most Americans disgusted and believing they will hit the government trough for even more. So why do Americans hate the Big3 U.S. automakers so much? Didn’t we used to sing “Baseball, Hot Dogs, Apple Pie and Chevrolet” while we cruised around in the Chevette back in the day? There we go. Maybe that’s the problem.

Chevy Chevette

Not the best car.

Here are a few other little ditties (or should I say doodies) from the past:

  • Chevy Lumina
  • Pontiac LeMans
  • Ford Maverick
  • Chrysler Reliant K Car
  • Ford Escort
  • Chevy Celebrity (Eurosport Addition … oooooo!)
  • Buick Le Sabre
  • Ford Aerostar van (and later Freestar)
  • Dodge Shadow
  • Pontiac Aztek
  • Chevy Cavalier / Pontiac Sunbird / Cadillac Cimarron (really, a Cavalier with Caddy tags? Come on!)
  • Dodge Diplomat
  • Chevy El Camino
  • Ford Fairmont / Mercury Zephyr
  • Chevy Citation
  • Cadillac El Dorado
  • Ford Pinto

I am only scratching the surface, but you get the point. These companies have been churning out dogs for the last 35 years and Americans had been buying them up. Why? Japanese, German and even Korean cars have been proven to be superior for many years now. We were doing it because we are patriotic. We wanted our hard earned money going to an American worker and that trumped quality. The Big3 strategy for years was to take advantage of this by building crap and playing the “Buy American” dupe card to keep us loyal, while quietly sourcing manufacturing to Mexico, Canada … even China to squeeze in more profit.

Americans have spent years being taken advantage of by the Big3 and we’re pissed about it. Now that foreign automakers are employing hundreds of thousands of Americans here at home, we are much more willing to give our money to them for a quality car. So much so that the Toyota Camry is now the best selling car in America and Toyota outsells all others around the world.

But the biggest reason why Americans hate the Big3 U.S. automakers is that Americans are ULTRA-COMPETITIVE. Japanese and European car companies have been trouncing us for years in technology, quality, performance, etc. We are Americans and we want to be the BEST! We hate failing or being a laughing stock and these cars have been a joke around the world. The Big3 have taken advantage of us, taken us for granted and ultimately let us down. Let our pride down and we are disgusted. To hell with bailing them out!

Message to the Big3: Each company should use a bit of that bailout money to hang giant red dots in every single department to promote a goal of achieving Consumer Reports’ highest rating in all categories. Then use the rest to do nothing but build a world-class fleet of cars that smoke the foreign competition. Only then will they win back Americans respect and loyalty.

UPDATE: Classic! U.S. Auto Bailout Team Drives Imports. Also, check out a great post at HotAir.com.

Oh man, how did you miss the Chevy Chevette. That car got the Windbag family from here to there for 7 years, and poorly at that!
