While a Republican Governor and Senator have made recent news for their inability to keep their libido in check (although we should not forget the former governors of New Jersey and New York as well), we can not keep a blind eye to politicians and their family members whose shortcomings are a bit more offensive. Let’s take the wife of Rep. John Conyers (D-MI), Monica Conyers, the Detroit City Council President Pro Tem:

Detroit City Council President Pro Tem Monica Conyers pleaded guilty this morning to conspiring to commit bribery and is free on personal bond.

U.S. District Judge Avern Cohn said, “The defendant now stands convicted.”

The one count of conspiring to commit bribery is punishable by up to five years in prison.

No sentencing date has been set.

Conyers, the wife of powerful Democratic congressman U.S. Rep. John Conyers, appeared before Cohn to answer charges in connection with the wide-ranging probe of wrongdoing at Detroit city hall.

Really? As a resident of a Great Lake state, I am just outraged for my Michigan brothers and sisters.

“This is not the beginning and it is certainly not the end, folks,” FBI Special Agent in Charge Andy Arena said at a news conference this morning.

Arena said the message to corrupt public officials is, “We’re coming after you.”

Does Special Agent Arena mean Rep. John Conyers?

Hmmmm….

It is possible that Mr. Conyers might have been completely in the dark regarding his wife’s corruption, which would not be the first time a spouse is allegedly completely shocked (SHOCKED!) by his or her partner’s indiscretions. But if I could borrow a line from some of the Democrats in Congress during the Bush years, what did John Conyers know, and when did he know it?

If he did not know, then he is one of the unluckiest, super-powerful Congressmen in government. If he needs a lesson of what to do, you have to hand it to Gov. Sanford’s wife, Jenny, for playing her victim role perfectly.

As I said, this a bit worse than not keeping one’s pants up, as morally offensive as that is. In addition, there is a degree of separation from the national politician Conyers in this story, although there are many examples of first hand Democratic corruption in government.
