Deficit Trials of 2017
BY: WC WINDBAG
Soaring deficits has been the topic of multiple posts and responses on the Great Illuminator since its inception in 2008, and more than enough email fodder for Viking and I for years before that. Who is to blame? Bush? Obama? Democratic or Republican Congresses? It has all been open to debate, and will continue to be in the future on this site.
Along those lines, Ed Morrissey was sent a great ad from the 1980’s and posted it this afternoon to Hot Air. Here is the description:
WR Grace exec J. Peter Grace paid director Ridley Scott $300,000 to produce this 60-second commercial scolding America for its deficit spending during the Reagan administration:
Morrisey goes on to add his opinion:
The best way to describe this is, well, quaint. A $2 trillion national debt? Horrors! In actuality, using the Barack Obama budget plan, we’ll be looking at a national debt ten times larger than that by 2017. Do you think Ridley Scott will want to update this commercial with Obama in the dock instead? Naaaaaaaaaah.
There is no secret that this is a right-leaning blog, and so we have done our fair share of chiding President Obama for his back-breaking, bankrupting budget and spending… but we have also scolded former President Bush for not doing enough to stop a GOP Congress from spending more than we fiscally conservative nobodies would have spent. Looking back, times were good and so not enough effort was spent by Republicans living up to their principles. The People were probably right to “throw the bums out” in 2006, but the new bums they replaced them with seem to have bigger spending habits, and that at least scares me a bit.
But there may be hope… a new crop of Conservative Republicans with fiscally sound principles are now making their voices heard, like Bobby Jindal, Paul Ryan, Mike Pence, John Kyl, John Campbell, and others. Here’s hoping that “if they build it, they will come,” and a whole new round of “bum throwing” in 2010 will occur.
