Progress: ‘De-Baptism’ Trend in UK; UPDATE: BBC Video Added

BY: WC WINDBAG
“When people stop believing in God, they don’t believe in nothing— they believe in anything.”
–G. K. Chesterton
What could go wrong when people shed ancient truths dogmas for a new and more enlightened… maybe superior way of thinking?
More than 100,000 Britons have recently downloaded “certificates of de-baptism” from the Internet to renounce their Christian faith.
The initiative launched by a group called the National Secular Society (NSS) follows atheist campaigns here and elsewhere, including a London bus poster which triggered protests by proclaiming “There’s probably no God.”
“We now produce a certificate on parchment and we have sold 1,500 units at three pounds (4.35 dollars, 3.20 euros) a pop,” said NSS president Terry Sanderson, 58.
John Hunt, a 58-year-old from London and one of the first to try to be “de-baptised,” held that he was too young to make any decision when he was christened at five months old.
I could hardly disagree with Mr. Hunt regarding making a decision, as I was 3 months old or so when I was Baptized. But is that the point? I mean, most religions that baptize at an early age also have Confirmation or other acceptance of the faith at an age where a decision can be made. So what’s the problem?
Michael Evans, 66, branded baptising children as “a form of child abuse” — and said that when he complained to the church where he was christened he was told to contact the European Court of Human Rights.
Oh… that. I can see how child abuse and having your child baptized is related. Talk about a stretch.
How about a non-stretch, but educated guess: I would believe whole-heartedly that the secular are more likely to believe in man-made, catostrophic global warming than the religious. Re-read the Chesterton quote.
Global Warming Climate Change has its profit Prophet, visions of Armageddon, holy symbols, and a Messiah.
Sounds like a religion to me. When can we start asserting child abuse for the early indoctrination?

You could say that about the conservative revolution, say with Ronald Reagan or with Barry Goldwater.
Religion requires faith. GW is a decision based on facts. That makes it by definition, the use of reason – the very opposite of faith.
As for GW, you may dispute the conclusions derived from fact, but you are still arguing over a fact: touchable, capturable, measurable, follows predictive laws of physics, and that can chemically bind with other real world things.
To be faith requires that it is not touchable, not capturable, not measurable, not predictive using physical laws, and will not chemically bind with other real world things.
One could say that deniers have more faith that GW is not real since they deny facts of the laws of physics. However, that is totally a stretch. What I will say is that both sides are arguing about a fact.
I threw the
GWCC stuff in just for fun. I see you enjoyed that section much more than the central premise. Personally, if one is an atheist, I don’t know why they even care what happened to them (baptism) when they are a kid. Take the high road and just move on. Going out of one’s way to remove your baptism is like driving 30 miles out of your way to avoid a stop sign.Trackbacks
