Romney/Jindal 2012?

If it wasn’t for GOP leadership putting in the fix for a highly contested Florida Primary, we might be debating the moves President Romney was making to revive the economy.

Mitt Romney was the leading candidate (in delegates) heading into the critical Sunshine State primary. Sensing his momentum, GOP heavyweights in Florida like the very popular Charlie Crist, and Senator and former RNC chair Mel Martinez came out for John McCain, tipping victory to the Maverick in a very close race. After this, Giuliani dropped out and tossed his muscle behind McCain supercharging his momentum going into Super Tuesday. These moves ultimately cleared the path for his eventual nomination. Conservatives, realizing what had been done, finally woke up and threw their support loudly behind Romney, but it was too little too late. Romney withdrew from the race soon after and faithfully backed the eventual nominee. He chose not to unnecessarily drain McCain for the sake of his ego (see Mike Huckabee), but rather show good character and concern for the best interests of the party.

Romney embodies everything Republicans could want in a candidate. He carries the presence of Reagan, personal morality of Bush2, and the scary smarts of Bill Clinton. He has proven time and time again that he can lead with great success in the private and public sectors, including turning around the Winter Games in Salt Lake City and leaving Massachusetts with budget surpluses. He also has the blessing of conservatives. This man was and is ready to lead and should be the party’s heir apparent. He is the real deal.

The biggest obstacle to a Mitt Romney candidacy is the blatantly bigoted media spreading false conclusions (over and over) that a “Mormon” could never win the GOP nomination because of Evangelicals, accompanied by Mormon-hate programming. Oh and of course blowing up (ad nauseum) changes he made on a few positions ala John Kerry, which got him skewered by liberal talking heads and a spiteful Huckster during the primaries. I believe these obstacles could easily be overcome with the full support of the party, and by effective promotion of his experience and track record. Heck, Bill Clinton had far more numerous and indecent indiscretions dismissed outright because of his effective, charismatic leadership and good saxophone playing. Romney can’t even hold Bubba’s Big Mac when it comes to lack of scruples.

Mitt Romney like all of us is not perfect, but he may have been exactly what the GOP and America needed. If Romney would have won the primary, the financial crisis of last fall would have showcased his overwhelming strengths and experience in this area; likely propelling him to victory. Of course, provided that he didn’t choose a RINO like Lindsey Graham (R- SC) as a running mate. Instead, we got the socialist ‘Obamonomics’ agenda of big government, dismissal of frightened markets and cultural hegemony. Don’t get me wrong, the election of President Obama was an absolutely wonderful societal reconciliation of foolish past prejudices, but it may not have been the best for governing. Time will tell.

Republicans should also be careful not to prematurely anoint an equally exciting, yet equally inexperienced candidate in Bobby Jindal, just because he has an Obama-like appeal. In these trying times, the country doesn’t need another rock star, it needs a great leader.

You neglected to mention that his “lifetime membership in the NRA” came the year before he announced his race; his life long love of hunting involved hunting “vermin”; and he was pro-abortion before he was anti-abortion (sort of a big change here).

I could go on, but I think he is an CINO which leads me to question his integrity. CINO is like RINO for conservatives.

He seriously hurt himself by not being honest with Republicans and conservatives. He should have forgone the gun stuff, and had a more consistently balanced view on abortion.

Otherwise conservatives will get a wishy-washy change with the wind politician.

You only like him cause there’s no one else.

Nope. Supported him in the primary.

Terrible flip-floppy things he did, yet I can overlook and/or accept his reasoning for it. Romney ultimately governed as a conservative. Can’t be a CINO. Bush, on the other hand …

If we had a grown up in office like Mitt Romney, someone could actually be addressing the financial crisis, instead of using the crisis as an excuse to implement universal health care, card check, federal government limits on CEO pay, and other liberal policy agenda items that will not fix the crisis.

Romney turned around businesses, the Olympics, and a state economy, which is more than the Obamessiah has done in his life. If McCain had lost to Romney in the primary, I am not sure we would be talking about President Obama today, but rather President Romney. His strength on ecomomic issues was unmatched in 2008.

I could care less if Romney joined the NRA yesterday or 20 years ago. That is typical pandering that every politician does, and quite frankly it is not the most important issue on the docket.

He is Pro-life, and he explains his evolution on the issue well and logically. Again, most people are not born pro-life, but evolve there. I know I did in college, once I understood what an abortion was and had a better understanding of when life begins.

The fact is, Mitt Romney is supportive of 95% of all conservative issues that are important to me, if not more. This makes him my ally worthy of my support, rather than my enemy who I would insult with a term such as CINO.

Unfortunately, I think the financial crisis (which started to hit in September of last year) doomed the chances of any Republican presidential nominee. Before then, McCain had a lead coming out of the convention.

However, if the economy hasn’t recovered by 2012, Romney will be in a strong position to get the GOP nomination and win in the general election.
