President Obama is set to take time off from his spendapalooza to sign an executive order on Monday lifting President Bush’s ban on the use of federal funds for embryonic stem cell research.

Contrary to the bad reporting and misinformation from advocates on this subject, Bush did not outlaw stem cells, only banned federal funding for the destruction of embryos for this research. Mad Scientists around the country still could get private funding. Also, embryonic stem cells showed amazing promise, but there was no concrete proof that they could actually fight diseases.

I believe Bush was right in keeping the American government from sliding down this very slippery slope. As an example of how ugly it can get, look at Ukraine. The country is considered the stem cell capital of the world, encouraging the practice and actively trading in stem cells from embryos, aborted fetuses and even new born babies. The BBC uncovered that Ukraine slid down this slope all the way to the bottom when new born babies were being killed to feed the need for stem cells. Sacrifices for the betterment of humanity (and commerce).

The BBC has spoken to mothers from the city of Kharkiv (Ukraine) who say they gave birth to healthy babies, only to have them taken by maternity staff.

In its report, the Council describes a general culture of trafficking of children snatched at birth, and a wall of silence from hospital staff upwards over their fate.

The move to draw an ethical line in the sand also encouraged alternative methods without the need to harvest and destroy embryos, which might not have otherwise been considered. Amazingly, scientists found other ways by using adult cells, skin, teeth, umbilical cord blood, bone marrow and even non-reproductive embryos.

House Minority Leader John Boehner, R-Ohio, offers this: “Advancements in science and research have moved faster than the debates among politicians in Washington, D.C., and breakthroughs announced in recent years confirm that the full potential of stem cell research can be realized without the destruction of living human embryos. This issue is not about whether federal dollars should fund stem cell research. There is little debate about that, and Republicans enthusiastically support adult, cord blood, and pluripotent stem cell research that have shown so much promise in recent years. The question is whether taxpayer dollars should be used to subsidize the destruction of precious human life. Millions of Americans strongly oppose that, and rightfully so. Taxpayer dollars should not aid the destruction of innocent human life.”

So why lift the ban now? Why must federal funds be used to harvest and destroy embryos?

“(It’s) about restoring scientific integrity to health care policy,” an administration official tells ABC News.

Oh, that’s why. This is definitely not Change I can believe in!
